Problem diagnosis
Polish high school students struggle with mandatory set texts like The Deluge by Henryk Sienkiewicz because they are imposed, lengthy, linguistically archaic, time-consuming, and often less relevant to students’ interests than other subjects.
Project Goal
The project aims to help students quickly understand, memorize, and revisit key content from the novel in the shortest possible time. By restructuring the text, introducing a clear hierarchy of information, and reducing unnecessary reading, the book supports efficient learning while remaining visually calm, lightweight, and affordable to print.
Key features
Selective reading system
Content is divided into levels: essential, important, and optional, helping readers instantly identify what they need to remember. Less important fragments are visually muted, allowing students to skip them without losing narrative continuity.
Summaries and repetition
Each chapter includes concise bullet-point summaries and event plans to reinforce learning and support quick revision.
Non-linear navigation
Numbered highlights link directly to summaries, enabling jumping between sections without reading sequentially.
Student-friendly language
Explanations and notes use contemporary, accessible language to clarify archaic expressions and historical context.
Optimized typography and layout
An asymmetric two-column layout, economical typeface choices, and thin but non-transparent paper balance readability with low production cost.
Exhibitions & presentations
The project was presented as part of the international exhibition cycle Design of Visual Communication in Time and Space.
